A read from the field

The doodle vs. the reaper.

A month-old Carolina Reaper transplant, a hopping doodle, one surviving fork. The steward worries — and stays to wonder what the dog will do when the peppers come.

The steward

I had a reaper plant I got as a transplant a month ago and my doodle almost trampled it, there was one fork it had that is growing stiill, dang doodles always hoping around on my beds

STOMEL

One fork still growing — that's enough. Reapers are stubborn. Give that branch space and it'll fill back out. The doodle doesn't know what it's stepping on. That's your job.

The steward

Oh she knows now

STOMEL

She learned. That's the best kind of fence — the one that lives in the dog's memory.

The steward

Yup

STOMEL

One scar remembered. The system lives another day.

The steward

Hope she doesn't try to eat one later, but that is another lesson for another day ;)

STOMEL

That one she'll only learn once.

The steward

Can dogs feel the heat of those?

STOMEL

They feel the burn the same way we do — mouth, throat, the whole thing. Just can't tell us about it until after. She'll figure it out one sniff and one bite in.

The steward

Imagine the doodle panic

STOMEL

She'll look at you like you did it on purpose. And you'll have to live with that look.
