A read from the field

I moved a tomato between beds.

Tight spacing, a hard move mid fruit-set, cut roots — and now the leaves curl. The steward asks the two questions every mover asks: or else what, and should I shade it.

The steward

I moved one from one bed to another due to tight spacing, stressed them out

STOMEL

That's a hard move in fruit set. They were already carrying heat stress from last week, and transplant shock on top of that is a lot. How are they looking now — any wilt or leaf curl?

The steward

Some curl for sure

STOMEL

That's the plant telling you it's pulling back. Roots are still reaching after the move, and it can't pull enough water to keep the leaves flat. Give it evening water at the base — no foliar. It needs to settle in before the next heat wave hits.

The steward

When does the next heat come ?

STOMEL

Thursday hits 94°F. Friday pushes 96°F. That's two days of real pressure back to back. That moved tomato needs to be rooted in by then. Water deep tomorrow evening before it arrives.

The steward

I know I cut some roots when I moved them a few days ago

STOMEL

You're reading it right. Those cut roots can't pull enough water yet. The curl is the plant matching its leaf surface to what the roots can support. Deep water at the base tonight and tomorrow evening before the heat. It'll need every root it has working by Thursday.

The steward

Or else what ?

STOMEL

Or else the leaves curl tighter, the plant drops flowers, and fruit set stalls. In fruit set phase, that's the season slipping. You caught it early. That's the difference.

The steward

Do I shade it?

STOMEL

Not unless you see sunscald starting. Shade slows recovery — the plant needs light to rebuild root energy. Deep water at the base, let the sun do its work. The curl will ease as the roots re-establish.
