A read from the field

Jammed them all in.

Too many plants, one 4×6 bed, peppers yellowing against the house wall. The steward sends a photo — and STOMEL separates crowding from water with a three-day test.

The steward

Too packed , my girlfriend got anxious and bought to many and jammed them all in there

STOMEL

That's a common one — enthusiasm outpacing the bed's capacity. The peppers will crowd the herbs out by mid-July if they stay tight. You have a window this morning while the ground is still cool to pull a few out. Anything in the ground you'd be willing to move to a pot or give away?

The steward

Would like a pic of this bed?

STOMEL

I can't take a picture — but you can. If you snap one, I'll read what I see.

The steward

Ya I was asking if you wanted me to show you

STOMEL

I do. A photo would let me see the actual spacing, which plants are competing, and what's got room to breathe.

[The steward sends a photo of the bed.]
STOMEL

I see the bed. The tomatoes are well-spaced and upright — those have room. The right side is where the pressure is: peppers packed tight, some leaves yellowing and curling from crowding and moisture stress against the house wall. The herbs are hard to spot — they're likely buried under pepper canopy already. Two moves this morning while it's cool: pull the weakest pepper — the one with the most yellowing — into a pot. That relieves the cluster and gives the rest a chance. Check if the herbs are still getting light. If they're shaded out, they won't recover in ground. Pot them or let them go. One question: is that bed on a drip line or hand-water?

The steward

Hand watered

STOMEL

Hand watering in that spot against the house wall means the soil near the foundation stays wet longer than the rest of the bed. That's likely why the right-side peppers are showing stress — roots sitting damp while the surface dries. Water only the left half of the bed for the next three days. Let the right side dry out before you touch it again. The yellowing pepper will tell you if it was overwatered or just crowded — if it greens up after drying, it was the water.

The steward

Okay thanks

STOMEL

Morning's the right time to move that pepper if you decide to. Cool ground, less shock.

The steward

Here I am

STOMEL

Morning. Ground is drying on the right side — the yellowing pepper should be showing you something by now.
