A read from the field

One pepper looks pale.

New peppers, new pale leaves, heat Friday — a clean diagnosis of uptake lag. Then yesterday's rain walks in mid-diagnosis, and the advice reverses on the spot.

The steward

I put in some pepper plants recently

STOMEL

Good. Peppers reward attention early. How are they looking — leaf, stem, posture?

The steward

They seem fine

STOMEL

Fine is a good place to start. Where are you?

The steward

28115

STOMEL

Mooresville. Zone 7b. Heat coming Friday — 90°F. Those peppers will feel it.

The steward

One looks a little different than the others

STOMEL

Which one — leaf, stem, or whole plant? And what's different — color, shape, posture?

The steward

Pale

STOMEL

Pale on the newest leaves or the whole plant?

The steward

New leaves

STOMEL

New leaves pale — likely the plant is pulling iron or nitrogen faster than the roots can supply. Heat spike Friday will test it.

The steward

How should I handle it

STOMEL

Water deeply tomorrow morning before the heat. Let the soil dry surface between now and then. Don't fertilize until you see the plant's response to the heat — stress + fertilizer can burn roots.

The steward

Okay we have had rain yestrday

STOMEL

Good. Soil's already wet. Skip watering tomorrow. Let the plant work through the moisture it has. Watch the pale leaves through the heat — if they green up after, it was uptake lag. If they stay pale, we'll look at soil access.
